I attended my first Fish Fry of the season Wednesday. I wasn't really planning on going to one, but one of the ladies at work runs the To-Go part of her churches fish fry and tempted me with extra shrimp. Man I love sea food. I brought along a fish fry virgin, my Jewish friend Liz. She felt awkward at first, like she was crashing some secret Catholic ritual, but she quickly adjusted and was taken back by the whole system the place had set up. I will day that it was more structured than the fish fry that I am used to. They had a ticket system, many lines and a lot more side items than I am customised to.
After the fish fry Liz and I filled out comment cards that I had made. I plan on finding the best fish fry in STL, so the cards are a good way to critique a place. Here is what we came up with.
Location: Seven Holy Founders
Time: 4:15 p.m.
Ease of locating the fry: It was easy to locate. We followed the line of old people flocking to it.
Speed of service: The line was out the door and it took a while to get through. Once we filled out our tickets and payed it was quite a walk to find the To-Go section. The wait once there was about 10 min.
Friendliness: The staff was very helpful. They recommended side dishes and gave good directions to the To-Go section. We did have issues with the dessert table lady, but she was also 10, so we aren't counting it against them.
Taste: There was WAY to much breading on the shrimp and fish. They gave me lots of tartar sauce, which is a plus because I enjoy the art of food dipping. The green beans were just as the ticket taker said, and were amazing. The potatoes and slaw were also better than expected.
Value: A fish meal was $7 and came with 2 pieces of fish, 2 sides and a piece of bread. Not a bad deal. Plus we got hella free shrimp. So that made it even better.
Overall: I found this not to be a bad first fry. I was not happy with the amount of breading on the fish, but there was nothing that I could really do. Everyone seemed friendly, sans 10 year old, and the system was very well organized with numbers being handed out to ensure you got what you ordered.
Rating: 6/10.
I think that my campaigns class is coming together nicely. It is a lot of work, but we all knew that coming into it. The district competition is in April but our book, which is what half our score is due at the end of March. This may seem like a lot of time but when you take into consideration we need to get the book professionally printed, bound and then shipped half way across country, we are basically looking at having everything ready by March 17th. Which is in 2 weeks. But I am not going to worry about that. I will sleep at school if I have to.
Last night I was out bowling with some friends. The lane to the right of us was high school boys, while the lane to the left of us was a separate group of high school girls. It was not a good spot. The best part of the night though came when one of the boys asked one of the girls what her name was. Clearly that is not funny, but what was funny is how she responded with Nonya, as in none of your business.
Classic, it was just classic. I think what made it even better was how at first I was thinking, Nonya? Is that foreign? But then I realized what she was saying. Ya, I am kind of slow, but eventually I catch on.
